AHMET FITOLOĞLU
Acropolis and women, 2015 — Ahmet Fitoloğlu, 2015, Oil on canvas

Signed Fitol 15, this work brings the artist's architectural roots directly onto the stage: a half-ruined Acropolis or İzmir Agora remnant behind; in front, five female figures lined up like a chorus with red-yellow headdresses. The central female figure is large and dominant, almost a goddess; the others around her diminish and multiply. A red sun (or moon) hangs in the sky. It brings together the mythological and modern layers of the Aegean geography on the same canvas: stone, body and colour. An important work where Fitoloğlu finds his own place within a tradition of 'history painting' — without romanticising antiquity, but with a tribute to it.
