The gaze is not directly at the viewer; it looks sideways at something, as if waiting for something to happen. Few works by the artist live the manifesto's idea of 'blue and green: the flow of time, the breath of life' this directly. The thick, layered paint strengthens the physical presence of the portrait; it breathes not on the wall but in the room.
